CAUSES OF HEARING LOSS IN CHILDREN
Today, an audiologist can evaluate a child's hearing at any age....even right after birth. Even a mild hearing loss may interfere with learning. Early identification and treatment are the key to success.
An infant or young child
should have a full test if:
1.) The infant does not respond to sound consistently.
2.) The infant is not startled by loud sounds.
3.) There is a history of frequent ear infections.
4.) A family member has a permanent hearing loss, or prenatal factors indicate higher risk than normal for hearing loss.
5.) The child does not seem to be developing speech at an appropriate age.
Prompt medical treatment resolves most temporary hearing problems.
Children with permanent hearing loss need to be fitted with hearing aids and get speech and language therapy at as early an age as possible.
